Disavowed: A small, fun dungeon crawler aiming for release on 18th February.
What is it?
Disavowed is a game for those who want their dungeon fantasy adventure to purely be just that, bonkers magic, goblins, and treasure! It’s a small project, but one with fun and solid retro action at its core.
Why are you making it?
Frankly, to be the opposite of the current AAA offerings. So yes, it will have a well-written story, yes, it will have 16-bit power graphics, and yes, it will feature sexy ladies and muscly barbarians in loincloths, all running at a locked 60fps!
Jokes aside, we’ve always wanted to make a sword and sorcery game. So, we’re making a prototype and seeing where it goes.
When can I play it?
Soon! And I mean we’ll be developing this game, unlike our other projects, not behind closed doors. I’ll push builds with programmer art, unrefined mechanics, and all the ugly stuff no one usually wants you to see. Why? Well, it’s the reality of game development, isn’t it? Seeing something grow and evolve is a joy for me, so why shouldn’t it be a joy for others who are interested in that sort of thing?
Why isn’t Bubblegum Zombie Hunter out yet?
That’s a long story. While it’s still in development, it has faced a significant internal setback that, unfortunately, we couldn’t avoid. As a small reminder, we’re bedroom developers doing all this for free in our spare time. Naturally, things happen in this situation, projects get delayed or require more help to keep them moving. Disavowed is a much smaller project, with just one person working on it.
So you’re solo-developing this one? Who even are you?
I’m Brendan Toy, the creative lead on this. I handle the art and animation for our games and occasionally compose music. I’m still learning to code and often make smaller projects to expand my knowledge. Those smaller projects have led me to create things worth playing and sharing, and this is another venture to flex some new skills.
My day job is in TV, where I run a studio called Mammoth Digital Media with a colleague. We produce UK-based TV adverts and create content for companies worldwide.

Can I get involved?
The short answer is yes, but this is a passion project with minimal funding. The joy of creating is the main reward. If it becomes popular, you’ll be compensated for your time and input. Important Note: We have ZERO tolerance for generative AI. Music, art, and writing are crafts that AI butchers daily. It has no business being here.

Writer: I want a writer who can deliver a solid story. The outline is basic, with a premise for the characters’ circumstances, but we need someone to dive in and bring the world and characters to life. The story scope is small but must be well-written. Composer: I’m looking for someone skilled with chiptunes! The game’s atmosphere is dark fantasy with a Dungeons & Dragons feel. If that’s your jam, send me your audio reel or portfolio.

Programmer: I’m currently handling programming myself, but I wouldn’t mind help from someone more experienced. The game is being developed in GameMaker Studio 2, using GML (not visual scripting). If you’re interested, send me your rates and examples of games you’ve worked on.
