Bring Them Back (from the dead - Pixel Jam 2025)
BRING THEM BACK - From The Dead // pixel jam 2025
A MESSAGE TO YOU!
I love the steam riverboats, I had to include one in the title art, hearing the beautiful steam organ gently on the air as the boat enters the bay. What a lovely view! So lovely that I wanted to give you the option to hit the right mouse button and fade out all the titles, so you can sit on the hill and admire that view, take a moment to reflect, and enjoy it.
The gameplay scope was simple, customers come in, ask you to revive their beloved pets and other things, you match the ingredients and fight off voodoo ghosts!
in the future i'd love to add more ghosts that interfere with your ingredients by snatching them off the shelf, or mess with your gold!
As always with these things it's a case of balancing all the gameplay over time. For now, i'm super happy to hand this over to you dear player. I hope you enjoy having a click, make some customers happy.
If nothing else, I hope this brought a smile, and perhaps left a memory of the little voodoo shop (from the dead) in that little bay town.
THOUGHTS & PROCESS
This is my submission to the Pixel Jam for 2025. I had a great time working on this and crafting this small Voodoo world. Its not a complex game, I wanted a balance of casual clicker and atmosphere.
I'm hoping that people just enjoy being in the environment of the shop, and soaking up its vibes. its calm, quirky, and I tried my hardest to get a fantasy styled new Orleans/Caribbean mix.
Influences
My influences are very much from the Monkey Island days of 90's pixel art back drops, I felt that was important to get some good ones in there to really pull you into the world as much as possible. Within 10 days, being a solo developer I had to keep my scope super tight.
There are some downsides and things I can expand on post jam, things like adding a bigger variety of customers that enter the shop.
I wanted each customer to feel unique and have something interesting about them, adding more character to the world, like you'd want to know more about them... naturally that meant I only had time to make 3 for this jam submission. I hope you find them charming enough, and can see what direction I was going for.
Audio
Sound was obviously a massively important factor to get that atmosphere right. I used some recordings of my own, and made some new sounds from combining and mixing a few recordings from freesound.org (list below of the raw sounds) but I've heavily edited most of them beyond recognition in some ways.
I was lucky in a way, that I found a recording of Calliope (on freesound), which is an organ on the Natchez steam powered river boat. You can see footage of it in action here.
PIXEL ART
So this was a lot of work, three full screen backdrops, 5 characters, 8 unique ingredients, each with hand crafted animations. I wanted to focus on this the most! It takes time and effort to make them look good, and I didn't have a lot of time to work with, this is absolutely me flexing what I can do in a short amount of time. Sure, there are a lot of things i'd fix and drill down on a lot more if this wasn't in a jam situation, but i'm pleasantly surprised this didn't kill me haha.
for the title art I started with a grey sketch to get the layout right and block in my landscape, then refined and refined until I got it to where it is now. Then it was a case of bringing that final art into Pyxel edit (my animation software) and then animating small aspects of different parts of the image to bring a bit of life to it. The title art alone took 1 entire day of my development time. But it was worth it to me, I love how it turned out and i'm super proud of it.
Audio Credits
noted earlier, some of these I modified or used small portions, but I've included the links to the full sounds.

I was able to get 1030 gold! I love the art and the sound effects are epic- really makes the game feel immersive. I can tell a lot of work went into this and I love it :D
hey, that's a good score! :) Thanks so much for playing, glad you enjoyed it!
The art and vibe of this game is amazing. Playing through it made me want a full game in this world! The controls for putting the ingredients could be a bit smoother (or maybe even have them be phhysically throwable into the pot ?) but great job regardless!
Agreed on the controls, its the "drop area" of the cauldron that is the culprit. it just needs to be bigger than it currently is. a quick fix for sure.
wonderful that you'd like to see an expanded world. would be nice in the future if you could leave the shop and head out into the land and forage for stuff and meet other characters.
Thanks for playing!
Lovely game! Clearly very nice artwork, and the colours pop! Gameplay is a bit fiddly trying to grab the right item and put it exactly in the right place, when I think the focus is supposed to be on picking the right items in the right order. Maybe the area to drop the items could be bigger than the cauldron? Or maybe I just need to get better at it lol.
Another idea is some people requesting an unknown recipe but giving clues about what should be in it.
It would be interesting to add more challenges and obstacles to make the game a bit deeper, but I think overall it's great! Nice work.
All great ideas, and yes ones that I had some thoughts about, but with 10 days, and a lot of art to do I had to draw a line on some features/mechanics pretty early on. However, after the Jam i'd like to expand on it a little more to round it out :)
Agree with the cauldron drop space, could be bigger, especially when you're rushing to drop items quickly. I've had some misses that have cost me a round. So I will address that.
Thanks for the feedback!
Terrific! I really like the art and the animation, the game is so complete.
thanks so much! glad you enjoyed it, I tried hard to make it feel like a complete experience, but there are more features that i'd love to have added if I had more time. future update, post jam and after sleep :P
The art is stunning.
The entire composition is voodoo-style, and the animations are so polished.
I congratulate you and thank you for creating this beautiful thing.
Thank you so much! Really glad you enjoyed it and appreciate my art :)
Nice and fun! I love the art and the concept ! congrats :-)
hey thanks so much for playing!
This was so fun! I really loved the art. The atmosphere was top notch, and it felt really cozy. Your game was one of the ones I most wanted to play when you posted your title screen, and the rest of the game did not disappoint!
thanks so much for playing, so glad the art resonated with you so early.
nice
thanks so much for playing! :)
WHAT BEAUTIFUL DRAWINGS AND ILLUSTRATIONS!
I really liked everything, the concept is great!
The only thing I would say is that maybe it's TOO fast haha, at first I didn't manage to place any objects.
But then I was able to learn and got it right. Still, excellent, very nice, it also lacks music. otherwise great!
I hope you go far!
thank you so much, really appreciate that! :) i'm glad you enjoyed the art :)
<3
I love the style, atmosphere, and all the little details/polish you added. Really good submission!

Great artwork. I like the vibe of the game a lot. Not my game though. I played for like 3 minutes and was already stressed about the ghosts.. :D Leave me alone T_T"
Keep up the great work!
Oh and yes. I made some customers happy. Not all though.. :D
Haha thank you so much for playing! :) glad you enjoyed it, sorry about the stressful voodoo ghosts!
Like the art, I am bad on this genre of games so I found it a bit hard but that's my problem. Great submission!
